I think I was barking up that particular tree with the lines, "perhaps no capacity for belief is more important than the capacity to believe in one’s own ability to have faith in erroneous conclusions. Whether the context is secular or religious, that capacity is essential to remaining in touch with reality and adapting to new information as personal growth, new experiences, and fresh discoveries provide access to increased knowledge." It was an obtuse way to put it (as is my vice, especially without extensive editing.) Still, I think with that text I meant to say the same thing you said.

Also, thanks for sharing your thoughts. This project is a virtual ghost town, but any day now I think I'll see if I can't do another few weeks or months of regular writing here. Some real activity certainly nudges me in the right direction.

I would like to suggest that an important function of religion is to instill the idea of humility. That also is a vital part of becoming a scientist. You have to admit that you don't know everything before you can be open to making discoveries.

Very good post. Check out my blog. It focuses on religion, secularism, cognitive science (including the cognitive science of religious belief and behaviour), the ID and atheist movements, science, science and politics, and philosophical and modern cognitive science perspectives on wisdom and wisdom-promoting activities like meditation. Yeah, it's a fair bit of variety.

I must offer up yet another editorial note, as my ISP decided to go kablooey just before midnight on December 23rd. As I was wrapping up this essay at the same time, I was unable to squeeze it in under the wire. Only this afternoon was I able to return to the Internet. With any luck, the previous week will be my last in the series of missed self-imposed quotas. In any case, happy holidays to What You Should Think readers, and may the year ahead be full of wonders and delights for each and every one of you.
